Better Youth is a mentoring and media arts nonprofit organization dedicated to instilling creative confidence, bridging resource gaps and preparing foster/ system-impacted youth for sustainable success within the creative economy. With 16 years and over 12,000 young people served, Better Youth is a committed beacon of hope aimed at easing the daily adversities of young people, while also helping to uplevel them professionally through state-certified pre-apprentice and apprenticeship pathways in digital storytelling, namely via short film and animation.
Better Youth’s CEO and Founder, Syd Stewart, started the organization as a music and creative writing program in the heart of New York City, which has since grown into an LA-based community staple and resource. Better Youth recognizes the transformative power that a film education can offer, but beyond the technical aspects of the art form, Better Youth also aims to foster self-expression, collaboration, and critical thinking – all essential tools for navigating life's challenges and emerging as a well-rounded individual. This deep-rooted intentionality can be life-changing for the populations of foster youth that this organization cares to serve.
Over the years, Better Youth has continued to streamline its programming and networks of resources, intending to provide a more holistic approach to supporting its students. The expansion of industry and community connections has allowed for more direct, need-based services to be offered, from housing and emergency funds to mental health services and even acquiring a cell phone. Anything that the Better Youth team observes as a need, they are committed to opening those doors of access, instead of simply just providing directions.
This determination has led Better Youth into upgraded, new headquarters: The Beehive in South LA, which allows for more space, advanced tech, and access to industry-standard equipment that challenges and trains students for adaptability within an ever-changing industry. 2x Better Youth alum turned Resource Assistant, Autumn Taylor, has witnessed these developments first hand with much admiration and pride. “I feel like I’ve grown with them. I want to continue to be a part of the movement because it means so much to me! I remember being in my teen years, studying with them, to now helping open doors for more and more young people. It motivates me to keep going.” These programs truly lead to an enriched sense of self-belief and professional opportunity, as participants, mentees, and alum go on to forge unique and empowering paths of success.

The highly anticipated annual event platforms talented young storytellers from around the globe! This year's Reel to Reel Film Festival takes place on Saturday, October 5th, 2024 at the LA Film School, marking its 10 Year Anniversary! It promises to be a captivating evening of raw talent and artistic expression!
Reel to Reel, however, is more than just a showcase; it is a validation of creative spirit and a stepping stone for many filmmaking journeys! The film festival serves as a culmination to the hard work and dedication of Better Youth's participants who, throughout the program, engage in workshops, hone their technical skills, and collaborate to bring their visions to life. The festival provides a stage to screen their films, not just to an appreciative audience, but also to industry professionals, with noteworthy guests over the years such as Kofie Siriboe, Monique Coleman, Bob Saget, etc., and the attention of incredible sponsorships like Amazon, Warner Bros. and The National Endowment for the Arts. This exposure has proven to be a game-changer for many featured young artists, opening doors to internships, mentorships and increasing the potential for generative recognition.
